What is the difference between a wedding planner, designer, and coordinator?

A wedding planner handles the logistics—budget, vendors, timeline, contracts, and the overall planning process from engagement to “I do.”

A wedding designer focuses on the aesthetic—mood, color palette, florals, tablescapes, rentals, and the overall visual story of the day.

A wedding day coordinator steps in closer to your wedding (60 days prior) to manage the final details and execute the day-of, ensuring everything you’ve already planned runs smoothly.

Our boutique approach. We intentionally take on a limited number of weddings each year and space them thoughtfully, allowing us to dedicate our full creative attention to every couple. Each celebration is treated with the same care and craftsmanship we’d give our own—where personalized planning meets intentional, beautifully executed design.

Where do you plan and design weddings?

Wherever you’re dreaming of saying “I do”, we will be there to plan & design it with you.

Rooted in Orange County and inspired by the California coast, Sophia Katarina Events designs celebrations from Santa Barbara and Malibu to Catalina Island to Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and San Diego.

We also travel inland to Palm Springs, Temecula, Santa Ynez, and Julian. For couples drawn to celebrations farther afield, we travel throughout the country, into Mexico, and across the globe.

How far in advance should we book a wedding planner?

It depends on the level of support you’re looking for. For Full Wedding Planning & Design, we recommend reaching out as soon as you’re engaged, ideally 12-18 months out, though we’ve absolutely worked with couples on shorter timelines. The earlier we begin, the more we can shape together, but if your date is sooner, don’t hesitate to reach out.

For Wedding Day Coordination, we recommend contacting us at least 6 to 9 months before your wedding to ensure we’re available for your date.

Which planning package is right for us?

The right package depends on the level of support you’re looking for. Full Wedding Planning & Design is ideal if you want guidance from the very beginning—a creative partner to refine your vision, curate your vendor team, and polish every detail along the way. Wedding Coordination is best suited for couples who have completed wedding planning and want an experienced team to step in and execute the day with care.

What if we don’t have a clear wedding vision yet?

You don’t need a clear vision when we start. Part of the process is exploring ideas together, discovering what resonates, and refining your vision as we go. Many of our couples arrive with only a feeling or a few inspirations, and the design evolves beautifully from there.

How involved will we be in the planning process?

As involved as you’d like to be. Our process is collaborative by design and every couple is different. Some love being hands-on with each decision, while others prefer to trust us fully and enjoy a more done-for-you experience.

No matter what you prefer, we’ll guide you through every decision, present curated options based on your style, and handle the logistics so you can stay focused on the moments that matter.

How do you balance our design vision with our budget?

Bringing your design vision to life thoughtfully is central to how we work. We help you identify which elements matter most, allocate budget intentionally, and find creative solutions that elevate the celebration without compromising its integrity.
